behind the "YouthVote"
Growing up in a household that emphasized civic engagement had me wishing away some of my youth for the day I turned 18 and could finally vote. I remember being excited to finally participate in our elections and apply what I've learned in history class to real life. I was well-prepared to cast my vote, but I couldn't help but notice the lack of people my age at the polls. Wasn't everyone just as excited to turn 18 as I was? Didn't my generation know that things were slowly falling apart and that we were the ones that needed to fix it? Was the plan to be complacent with the current state of our democracy? No, that couldn't be the plan, and it wasn't. The issue wasn't that my generation didn't want to have a say, it was that they didn't know how to. There was an education gap present ; I had friends that didn't grow up in a politically active households; peers who never learned about the political system in school and didn't think to do research outside. And so that's why I created the Youth Vote. It's not extensive, and that is intentional. I hope this information doesn't overwhelm you, but instead makes you excited to exercise these constitutional rights now that you understand them. So I hope you enjoy, learn a little, and vote a lot!
